McCarren Park Concession
A dilapidated comfort station in McCarren Park, Brooklyn will be transformed through an interior renovation and exterior expansion into a food and beverage concession for the public and a maintenance and operations facility for the NYC Department of Parks and Recreation.
After winning an RFP through the NYC Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR), BK Bazaar and KTISMAstudio, began a 2 yr design process deeply integrated with the public and involving reviews and approvals from DPR, the NYC Public Design Commission, Brooklyn’s Community Board District #1, and the NYC Department of Buildings. The resulting design is a study in the connection between new and old in which two glazed extensions delicately float independent of the existing structure. Full height sliding glass doors open to reveal steel columns that carry the rhythm of the historic arched masonry to the new façade and create a seamless connection between the interior seating and garden patio outside.
